Intrauterine Device Protects and Even Cures You

Nowadays methods of contraception aren’t just performing a birth control function. They can protect you from sexually transmitted diseases (condoms), serve as lubricants (spermicides), treat hormonal imbalances (oral pills). Among such multifunctional means of birth control is an intrauterine device or IUD.

An intrauterine device should only be installed by your gynecologist. This procedure is simple and fast. The contraceptive action starts immediately after the installation of the device. As soon as the device is removed, its action stops and you can start your attempts to conceive.

The Pros of IUD

  1. It doesn’t require any effort and control. If it’s already there – it works. No need to bother yourself with any other manipulations. No risks, as in case if you forget to drink your pill. Just relax and enjoy.
  2. It is a convenient birth control option for breastfeeding women. Not all oral contraceptives suit them during this period. The intrauterine device has no effect on a woman’s breast milk and provides safe and reliable birth control.
  3. Some types of intrauterine devices release hormones that treat some abnormal gynecological conditions. Among such are endometriosis, some certain inflammatory diseases, and non-malignant tumors.  Besides the contraceptive function, the local action of hormones released by the device relieves these pathologies.

The Cons of IUD

  1. The first days of having an intrauterine device can be uncomfortable. There can be pain or even a slight bloody discharge. A month after installation, it’s recommended not to swim, train, or go to the sauna. It is necessary for the body to form an adequate immune build-up on a foreign body without rejecting it.
  2. There is a risk of developing an ectopic pregnancy. The intrauterine device disables the egg from planting into the uterine wall, so it dies. But sometimes, a fertilized egg manages to plant into the uterine tube and starts developing there.
  3. The device provides no protection from sexually transmitted diseases. Moreover, with IUD these diseases get more severe than without it. This is why it is a preferable option for stable or married couples.
  4. There is a risk of failure. A failure of IUD means an inflammation caused by the damage of the uterine walls or falling out. The first is the result of imporper installation, the second – a neglectful attitude of a woman to the recommendations about the post-procedure period.

However, disregarding the risks a IUD brings, it still remains the best option for breastfeeding mothers or women who need a conservative uterine fibroids treatment.
