What to Do with a Junk Car

< Previous | Main | Next >

15th Jan 2019

Do you have an old car that you don’t drive anymore? Is it just taking up space that you want to use for other purposes? No worries, there are a couple of different things you can do with your junk car to get rid of it. Here are four ideas to get you started:

1. Donate It to Charity for a Tax Write-Off

There are many charities that have car donation programs. Often, these type of charities will sell the junk cars for parts to put the profits back into the program. Or they can fix up the cars and use them for their mobile services, saving money on purchasing vehicles. Regardless of what the charity will do with your donated car, you will get a receipt that you can use for deduction on your taxes.

Most times the charity will send a towing truck to come and pick up the car at your location, so this option is fairly convenient. Usually, there are no complications when donating a car to a charity. However, there are bogus charities, middleman, and legal issues you may face. To make sure you’re not getting cheated, read these tips on donating cars.

2. Sell It Whole or in Parts

Just because you have no use for your junk car doesn’t mean other people won’t find it useful. Even if your car isn’t in a running condition, it still has parts that are worth money. You can part it out and sell the parts on Craigslist. Or you can get in touch with a local junkyard to see if they would buy your junk car for cash. The great thing about selling it to a scrapyard is that often they will come and pick it up for free. However, by far the most convenient method is to visit ecarscash.com and receive an instant quote for your junk car.

3. Trade It In for a Newer Model

If your old car has any resale value left at all, you might be able to trade it in towards a newer car. You won’t get a lot of money through this method, but whatever you will get will be applied to the new car your buying. This is much easier than parting out or trying to sell the car yourself.

4. Recycle Useable Pieces

Before taking your car to the scrap yard, scavenge and recycle any pieces that you may use elsewhere. Maybe your kids would enjoy swinging on a tire suspended from a tree. Perhaps the side glass or windshield can be used for something. Take a good look at the car, create an inventory of the available parts. Afterward, think of creative ways to use them somewhere.
