7 Things You Shouldn't Leave in Your Car in the Cold

< Previous | Main | Next >

Winter is a special time of the year for car drivers. You need to be careful and attentive when driving because of slippery roads. There are many more nuances that you should be aware of if you don’t want to get into trouble in the winter.

For example, there are some objects that, in a frozen car interior, can not only deteriorate or lose their properties but also become frankly dangerous. If you leave them in the far in frosty weather, you may need to throw away these things or sell your car for cash since the interior may be damaged. In this article, we have gathered seven things you shouldn't leave in your car in the cold

1. Medicines

If you have been at the pharmacy, be sure to take your medicines home. The reality is that medicines should be stored at a temperature strictly defined by the manufacturer. If the drugs get too cold, it can make them not only ineffective but downright harmful to the body. In particular, it is important to prevent liquid medicines from freezing, but pills shouldn’t be left in the car in the cold as well.

2. Musical instruments (like other instruments made from thin plywood)

It is unlikely that any professional musician would dare to leave their beloved violin or beautiful double bass in the car unattended. But an inexperienced person can do this. For example, put a guitar in the trunk and forget. Only then should you not be surprised that your string instrument has ceased to sound as before or does not sound at all. Due to low temperatures, the instrument can lose its settings or cracks can appear and it will have to be repaired or changed.

3. Cans/bottles of soda and alcohol

The fact is that soda drinks in cans during severe frosts can become so overcooled that they begin to freeze. As it freezes, bubbles of carbon dioxide will begin to build up pressure, causing the aluminum can to explode. So the contents that have not yet had time to freeze will end up on the upholstery of the car interior or maybe the can will fly off after the explosion and damage something.

4. Canned food

Canned foods can also expand when it becomes frozen (meat also contains water). This can cause the can to swell and seam loosening, which can encourage bacteria to enter if you forget to stew for a long time. However, you can save food if you forgot a few canned food in the car overnight and you know that the blistering of the package was caused solely by freezing. Rinse canned food with clean water, wipe it off, and wait until it thaws. Open, check consistency and smell. If you suspect a product has gone bad, throw it away.

5. Eggs

Freezing chicken eggs is not a good idea. When the liquid inside the egg freezes, it expands and can crack the shell. Once the shell is cracked, it becomes very unsafe to eat the egg. But even if the eggs don't crack after freezing, they probably won't be as tasty anymore.

6. Household chemicals and paints

If you have various chemicals in pressurized cylinders and paints, try not to forget them in the car on cold. In the first case, for example, various detergents that include water can simply explode due to freezing and expansion of the water. Also, household chemicals stored at low temperatures may lose their properties.

In the second case, for example with paints such as gouache or acrylic paints, water can also freeze and it may turn out that a single mass of paint disintegrates into components. Its further use will be impossible.

7. Your mobile phone or tablet

You probably know that it's best not to keep your iPhone (like any other smartphone) or tablet under the scorching sun or in a heated car interior. However, you may not be aware that exposing your device to low temperatures can also affect its performance. Using your device outside the recommended temperature range may reduce battery power and even cause it to shut off.
