Do You Really Need A Sedan?

< Previous | Main | Next >

23rd May 2018

Sedan is a closed car body with two rows of seats and a luggage compartment, structurally separated from the cabin. This type of body is the most common among passenger cars. Sedans have become especially popular in the US and Russia. In Europe, car enthusiasts prefer other body types of cars for lease, such as a hatchback and station wagons. Thinking practically, the sedan body uses the available space in a less efficient way when compared to the station wagon. However, it looks more solid and, premium class cars are all made in the sedan body style.

The modern type of sedan body was formed in the late 30s of the last century. It can look quite differently though. Besides the modern look an average driver is used to, there are several types of sedans no longer used in the modern automotive industry. For example, a classic sedan. The classic sedan is divided into three distinct sections - the engine, passenger compartment and the trunk. The lengths of the engine compartment and luggage compartment of the classic sedan are almost the same.

An interesting example is a two-door sedan. This is a cheaper version of a conventional sedan with four doors. This type of body differs much from the coupe. In the coupe, the wheelbase is shorter, and the second row of seats has less leg space than in the two-door sedan. A coupe is a sport car that is usually made for two people to comfortably fit.

The main advantages of a sedan:

  • A representative appearance
  • The trunk is isolated from the salon
  • Wide range of specialization
  • A larger rear field of view

The disadvantages are:

  1. A small amount of trunk space when compared to universals and hatchbacks.
  2. Not the most rational way of space management in the car.

From a practical point of view, universals are more profitable and effective. This caused their immense popularity in European countries, because Europeans have gained the reputation of the more pragmatic people.

Still, each driver has his or her own considerations when choosing a car. It depends on your individual needs to decide what kind of car you need.
