How Sex and Menstruation Can Get Along Together

< Previous | Main | Next >

13th May 2019

When two people are in love and the endorphins kick in, they literally can’t get enough of each other. The sexual drive is, naturally, very strong too. And when the period comes, it can be a real struggle to be deprived of sex for the entire week. But do you really have to?

According to studies, orgastic sensations can bring you relief from your menstrual cramps. Constriction of the uterine muscles relaxes their painful stiffness, improves better blood outflow and blocks pain due to the release of endorphins. Many women feel a stronger sexual drive during these days, become more sensitive and their orgasms are stronger.

There are benefits for men too. The temperature of a woman’s body is higher when she’s on in her menstrual cycle, so this can improve the partner’s sensations as well. Due to the increased discharge, there is no need for any additional means of lubrication. It also makes you closer and increases the bonding between you, because sex during menstruation is a much more intimate process than the average sex.

How to Do It Right

However, this time of the month is special and requires certain preparations. Here’s how you can do it.

Sex is not all about the penetration

In the first two days, when the bleeding is very severe, it’s better to please each other in ways others than penetration. Why you should be careful? During the menstrual cycle, the cervix is more open, so there is an open pathway for bacteria to get inside the uterus and increases the risk of needing to visit an endometriosis specialist afterward. Clitoral orgasms work the same way as your uterus and make it safe.

Hygiene is the top importance

Both partners should wash their hands before sex. Many women and men are concerned about the dirt the process may bring. To minimize the mess, be sure you have enough towels around you. You can also put a dark sheet over your bed not to spoil a white one with accidental stains.

You still need protection

Although there is a stereotype that a woman can’t get pregnant when she’s on her period, the chances still exist. Besides, an open cervix allows any infection to easily get inside. Even if you’re completely sure in your partner, there are still bacteria living on our genitals, so be sure to use protection.

Mind your positions

Extremely deep penetration can bring both partners increased pleasure, but it’s not advised in the days of the period. An open cervix and the risk of pushing the blood inside the uterus requires a gentler approach. Avoid sex positions that provide deep penetration and use less aggressive ones such as the missionary position. A good way to go is when a woman is on top so that she can control the depth of penetration herself (unfortunately, it’s the messiest way, too).

However, listening to her own body is the main thing for the woman during this time. If she doesn’t want sex and wants to just cuddle, it’s ok - the menstruation won’t last forever and you can go back to your passionate sex in a couple of days.
