Long summer days might feel far away. However, it's never to early to prepare your home for warmer weather. By getting ahead on your springtime chores, you can spend more time relaxing when summer actually arrives. Here are a few home maintenance tasks to add to your checklist.

1. Clean the Gutters

Fall and winter can wreak havoc on your gutters. Fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris build up in the gutters, potentially causing clogs. The gutters are also at risk for ice dams during the winter, and this issue can loosen the gutters and damage the siding. So, you'll want to make sure that the gutters are clear and secure before warm-weather rains begin. Take some time to clean out the gutters, or hire a professional to do so.

2. Run an AC test

You don't want to turn the air conditioning on when summer starts only to realize it isn't working. This is why it's important to run a test ahead of time. Turn on the air conditioning during the early spring. Let it run and note whether anything seems off, such as unusual noises or uneven cooling. Call an air conditioning technician to inspect the unit. If they notice any issues, they will recommend repair or replacement before the season starts. You can work with this professional to choose a new unit if you do need to replace the AC.

3. Insulate the attic

Poor insulation isn't only an issue in the winter. A drafty attic can let cool air out and warm air in, spiking your energy bills. So, be sure to check your attic's insulation before summer. You might find that the insulation or radiant barrier needs replacing. Doing so will ensure that your home stays cool during the coming summer and warm the following winter.

4. Trim the trees

While it might be too early in the year to take on full landscaping projects, you can get started by pruning your trees. Trimming overgrown and dying tree branches early in the year can encourage healthy growth later on. You can then keep the trees healthy by maintaining them throughout the warm season as well. And of course, you can hire a professional to complete this task if you aren't sure how to approach it.

5. Start pool prep

Opening your pool in the summer can be a daunting task. Fortunately, you can start getting your pool and surrounding area ready ahead of time. If you need to touch up the fence around the pool, spring is a great time to do so. For example, you might need a new pool gate. A strong gate and fence are essential for backyard safety, so be sure to schedule this installation as soon as possible. You can then enjoy the yard with your family, knowing that your children are safe.

6. Repair outdoor plumbing

You might not think about your yard sprinklers and hoses until you need to use them. However, it's important to inspect and clean these fixtures before the season begins. Run the hoses to clear out any debris that collected while they were in storage. You can also inspect the sprinklers for damage. This is especially important if they're installed in your yard since ice and snow can cause cracks in the sprinkler components. Schedule any repairs and purchase new parts early on, so you can get a jump start on lawn care when the weather warms up.

Prepping your home for summer can feel overwhelming. However, you can save yourself a headache by starting early. Create a yard care checklist and tackle it in pieces. You'll be lounging on a lawn chair by the time summer arrives.
