A bucket list's a list of things a person wants to do during their lifetime. Bucket lists vary based on the individual's interests. For example, one person may hope to write a novel, while another may dream of riding in a hot air balloon.

Traveling's a standard feature on people's bucket lists. Many Americans hope to see different parts of the country during their lifetimes, while visitors from around the globe also hope to see some famous tourist destinations in the United States. Let's take a look at some of the best places to visit in the United States and the essentials you should pack when visiting those destinations.

The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon's considered one of the earth's natural wonders. It's over 1,900 square miles and over 6,800 feet high at its tallest point, offering breathtaking views of the colored rock layers. There's plenty to see and do on a trip to the Grand Canyon, with some opting to horseback ride or hike on the trails or take a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. Water lovers can also head to the Colorado River for white water rafting.

Temperatures in Grand Canyon National Park can plummet to lows of 38°F in January, with daytime highs averaging 58°F in December and January, which is why you should pack warm clothing for a fall or winter trip to the Grand Canyon. Womens outerwear vests are an excellent option for travelers in the cooler months because you can layer them over other clothing. Hooded vests help keep your head warm and conserve body heat. A winter coat's another good option for people visiting this region during the cooler months. Pack warm clothes, such as sweaters and denim jeans. Whether you choose to wear a vest or winter coat, you can buy these items in a variety of colors, ensuring you look great in your vacation selfies.

Vicksburg

Vicksburg's a city in Mississippi. Known as The Key to the South, Vicksburg's an excellent destination for music history buffs. Blues musician Willie Dixon's from Vicksburg, and just one of the famous musicians hailing from The Magnolia State. Vicksburg's home to part of the Mississippi Blues Trail, a series of markers that identify famous sights that are part of the state's rich music history. You can also check out the images of famous Mississippi musicians at the HC Porter Gallery.

Vickburg's average high temperatures range from 59°F in January to 92°F in July and August, so be sure to consider when you're traveling when you pack for your Vicksburg vacation. Lightweight vests are excellent for cool evenings. T-shirts and shorts are ideal during the summer, but you'll want to opt for sweaters and pants during the winter months.

Gettysburg

Gettysburg is a popular tourist destination for Civil War history buffs. The Union Army's victories in Gettysburg shifted the momentum, leading to the Union's eventual victory. As a result, Gettysburg attracts millions of tourists each year who tour the battlefields and historic buildings or head out on one of Gettysburg's ghost tours.

Gettysburg enjoys warm summers and cool winters. It's common for residents to receive snow in the winter, although it usually doesn't last long. People visiting in fall or winter should pack jeans, tunics, sweaters, and vests to stay warm. Vests with a water-repellent finish are ideal for rainy or snowy days.

New York City

New York City's the largest city in the United States. Visitors can take in a concert at Radio City Music Hall or see a show on Broadway. There's plenty of international food to enjoy, and famous sites include the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. There are also museums and art galleries you can tour.

NYC can get hot in the summer, while winters bring cold temperatures and occasional blizzards. A winter coat's essential for visitors in the late fall and winter, while shorts and t-shirts are ideal for the warm summers.

There are plenty of unique destinations in the U.S. you may want to include on your bucket list. Some popular options include the Grand Canyon, Vicksburg, Gettysburg, and New York City.
