Oil and gas companies are still actively expanding production, pressing into previously unexploited frontiers, despite the fact that no new fossil fuel development is consistent with internationally agreed climate goals. Fossil fuel extraction also contributes to the extinction crisis and other local to regional impacts. Researchers are compiling extensive data on at-risk resources into maps that serve as an early warning system to shed light on the converging threats and provide tools for stakeholders seeking to protect these ecosystems and the people who depend on them. We will be exploring these topics in depth at our COP26 side event.
