27th Apr 2023

Hunter Valley is well known for its beautiful scenery, balmy weather, and most of all top-notch wines. Located in New South Wales, the area draws wine aficionados, foodies, and nature lovers from all over the world for various occasions, from weddings to wellness getaways. To have a unique adventure in this Australia’s favorite wine region, here are some of the most interesting ways to meet Hunter Valley.

Choosing from a wide range of accommodation

Whether you come here solo, with a partner, friends, kids, or colleagues, Hunter Valley provides a variety of lodging choices, including luxury resorts, upscale inns, and private cottages. For example, those looking for Hunter Valley accommodation to relax can opt for an estate with a swimming pool, like the Mandalay Villa. If you want to spend a weekend with friends, you can book the Amani estate which fits up to guests in six bedrooms.

Numerous accommodations are tucked away among vineyards, providing a serene and beautiful location for a break. They are close to spa services, restaurants, and golf courses or can be in a more remote spot for privacy. Moreover, you will find they have a wide price range so, even if on a budget, you can afford a modest, but cozy rental.

Indulging in wine-tasting tours

With more than 150 wineries, Hunter Valley is best known for numerous wine-tasting tours, visiting both small, family-owned vineyards to expansive, commercial operations. Visitors can join guided tours to walk among the vineyards, see the wine-making process, and taste a variety of award-winning reds, whites, and rosés. Although the region produces a wide variety of wines, the most prominent ones it’s famous for are traditional Semillon and Shiraz and unusual kinds, like Verdelho and Tempranillo.

Many wineries, such as Tyrrell’s Wines, Brokenwood Wines, and McGuigan Wines, also offer gourmet food pairings, cheese tastings, and cellar door experiences. Considering stunning views over the countryside, it's no wonder having a wine and dines experience is one of the most sought-after here.

Taking a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards

One of the most unique experiences in Hunter Valley is hopping on a hot air balloon and soaring above the vineyards, valleys, and mountains. If you want to gift a significant other a special romantic moment, book a ride at sunrise to see the incredible sky hues.

Unlike helicopter rides that are a bit noisy, this is a quiet trip with a gentle breeze and occasional bird song. So, it comes as no surprise that many decide to pop the question during the rides, and some even get married. But, you will have a wonderful time even if you only bring strawberries and a bottle of locally-made bubbly to admire the view.

Enjoying a walk in the Werakata National Park

Werakata National Park is a must-see destination in Hunter Valley if you want to see gorgeous natural areas and wineries. Just a short drive from the wine area, this is home to spectacular landscapes including sandstone cliffs, clear-water creeks, and dense forests. Visitors can stroll through the forest, have a picnic by the water, or just unwind and enjoy the peace of the park.

The park offers an ideal opportunity to get in touch with nature and appreciate the natural beauty of its unique flora and wildlife, which includes kangaroos, wallabies, and a variety of bird species. If you are not much of a hiker, you can take a bicycle ride through the park and spot some of its common residents —  serenading kookaburras and black-chinned honeyeaters.

Admiring art at the Loviz Art Gallery

The Hunter Valley’s Loviz Art Gallery is a wonderful stop for art lovers. This gallery of contemporary art exhibits paintings and street art by Tanya Loviz, a local artist. Her vivid and colorful artwork captures the scenery, wineries, and wildlife of the Hunter Valley region in a distinctive and alluring style, depicting its beauty. Visitors can buy reproductions or originals of her work, as well as Loviz-labeled greeting cards, olive oils, wines, and other products.

Supporting local crafters at the Handmade in Hunter Markets

Another treat for Hunter Valley guests is the Handmade in Hunter Markets. This thriving market offers a large selection of locally-produced goods, such as fresh vegetables and gourmet foods. However, art lovers have lots of reasons to come here as well, considering the arts & crafts offer is rich and diverse.

The visitors are welcomed on Saturday, and some Sundays at Kevin Sobels Wines in Pokolbin to see the work of regional craftsmen and buy one-of-a-kind handcrafted goods. No wonder, jewelry, clothing, pottery pieces, glass items, and many other products are among the favorite souvenirs from Hunter Valley.

Tasting craft beers at Sydney Brewery Hunter Valley

Sydney Brewery Hunter Valley is a small brewery situated in the Hunter Valley wine region that serves a variety of handcrafted beers, such as pale ales, IPAs, and stouts. This is a great place for a laid-back afternoon outing with its offer of brewery tours, tastings, and pub-styled food.

Once here, make sure you try its signature brew — the Lovedale Lager, unique for its citrus undertones and three types of hops. Nonetheless, those not into beers can try equally tasty Sydney Cider, or other locally-made beverages.

The bottom line

Unquestionably one of Australia’s favorite wine areas, Hunter Valley offers the ideal fusion of breathtaking scenery, renowned wines, fine dining, outdoor activities, cultural experiences, and relaxation. It has something for everyone, regardless of whether they are wine enthusiasts, foodies, nature lovers, or just looking for a peaceful retreat. Plan your next vacation to meet Hunter Valley and enjoy the tastes, sights, and experiences it wholeheartedly offers.
