Here are the six major demands from the Amazonia Calling initiative / Indigenous Political Declaration for COP30:
- Ensure the legal security of Indigenous territories (demarcation, titling, legal protection — including territories of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI)).
- Adopt and implement direct, flexible, culturally appropriate financing mechanisms for Indigenous Peoples and their organizations.
- Declare the Amazon as an exclusion zone from all extractive activities (especially oil, gas and mining), starting with Indigenous Peoples’ territories (including PIACI).
- Ensure full and effective participation and representation of Indigenous Peoples at all levels of decision-making processes (within the UNFCCC/COP framework).
- Adopt urgent protection measures for Indigenous and environmental leaders, women leaders, and defenders at risk; prioritise prevention/protection protocols coordinated with justice/human rights institutions.
- Recognise and integrate Indigenous knowledge systems as legitimate strategies for climate change mitigation, adaptation and environmental restoration.
