This workshop will explore the current landscape and potential for blockchain-based applications to address the growing deficit of accountability and trust in both public and private institutions. The participants will share and discuss the benefits and limitations of using blockchain technology to improve the efficiency, transparency, and auditability of the transactional systems of record that underpin our modern society.
In particular, we will take a look at “algorithmical governance” and how the deployment of blockchain-based rules and self-enforcing smart contracts could contribute to both supporting and supplanting the current legal framework, while addressing the risks that may come from excessive reliance on such systems.
This workshop will be oriented towards the production of a report looking at both the benefits and the possible caveats of these emerging technologies, through real-world examples and potential use cases.
The workshop will be an opportunity to meet and discuss with prominent figures in the blockchain space, including:
Vlad Zamfir (Ethereum)
Rick Dudley (Monax)
Richard Caetano (Stratumn)
Brian Crain (Tendermint)
Brian Behlendorf (Hyperledger)
Sebastien Couture (Stratumn & Epicenter)
Luka Müller-Studer (MME)
Constance Choi (COALA)
Primavera De Filippi (Harvard)
All participants will be invited to engage into an open discussion addressing emerging issues related to:
Technical implementation of blockchain-based applications designed to support or enhance the governance structure of existing institutions.
Regulatory questions and favorable legal frameworks for blockchain technologies
Social and political issues stemming from the mainstream adoption of these technologies
Legal challenges and opportunities related to the rise of algorithmical governance
We hope this conversation will lead to a more informed global consensus regarding the path forward for policymakers, business leaders, and civil society to work together to realize blockchain’s potential.
