It's that time of year again. Christmas is nearly upon us, and we're in that final sprint for last-minute stocking fillers and special gifts for our nearest and dearest. This year of course is slightly different; we're still firmly in the midst of a pandemic, budgets are undoubtedly stretched and we're being reminded to think a little harder about the gifts we're buying.

While it’s definitely easier to shop with larger companies, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic means that we’re all being urged to shop locally. Indeed, almost half of small business owners say that if everyone in their local community just spent £5 extra per week with small businesses it would help to keep them open in the long term, according to The Independent.

But, in the midst of yet another lockdown in many parts of the UK, how can we support our communities? Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing and hopefully shopping local this Christmas....happy shopping!

Ask your friends or neighbors for recommendations

Many towns and villages have community groups set up on Facebook which can be a great platform to ask for advice/recommendations on local businesses. What's App groups can also be a handy tool to tap into your friendship circles and get advice from the masses. Not on Facebook? The Nextdoor App is also a good way to connect to people, businesses, and happenings near your home.

Support your local farmer or deli

It's never been easier to order every part of your roast dinner online from large supermarkets, however local farmers and deli's are suffering as a result of this. Consider being a little more mindful this Christmas and switch to local - you might find a bargain or two!

Visit a virtual Christmas market

Yep, quite a few Christmas markets and fairs are taking their business online this year. The East Surrey Online Christmas Market, for example, has well over 4,000 members, and sees pre-approved stallholders share their wares via Facebook posts and photos. Kilkenny Christmas Market, meanwhile, acts as a virtual shop for local independent businesses. And Bath’s famous Christmas market has also taken its offerings online.

Opt for handmade gifts

Whether you’re on the search for jewelry, posters, mugs, or blankets, there are so many handmade businesses out there just waiting to be discovered. So why not swerve the usual big brands and instead shop online via sites such as Etsy, Not On The High Street and Wakuda?

Support your local bookshop

Many bookshops are unfortunately closed due to the pandemic, and sadly some will not be able to open again.
