Artificial intelligence (AI) is the technological frontier over which companies and countries are vying for control. According to recent reports, Alphabet invested roughly $30 billion in developing AI technologies. Baidu, which is the Chinese equivalent of Alphabet, invested $20 billion in AI just last year.

Companies aren't the only ones investing time, money and energy into advancing AI technology - there has been much talk of the Chinese government agressively pursuing AI technology in a bid to control a future cornerstone innovation.

Considering that some of the largest entities in the world are focused on advancing AI tech, it's almost certain that we will see even more significant advancements in 2019. The following are just a handful of AI trends to look out for.....

AI Medical Diagnostics

The key advantages of AI in diagnostics is early detection and better accuracy. Machine learning algorithms can compare a medical image with those of millions of other patients, picking up on anomalies that a human eye may otherwise miss.

Imagine a peer-to-peer network of computers that have the capability of solving some of the world's most challenging health problems by collecting and analyzing human molecular data? Thanks to Nano Vision this has become a reality. Using blockchain and AI, machine-learning technology seeks to identify and analyze illnesses to enable new drugs, treatments and cures at a fraction of the time and cost.

Natural Language Processing (NLP)

NLP is a subset of articifical intelligence, and essentially means building systems that understand human language. There have been huge developments in this area already, with Google and Amazon pioneering the way with Alexa and Siri, and unsurprisingly many companies are following suit. The potential to convert core business functions such as customer support chat and virtual assistants is huge, and has a long-term savings to go with it. Content Creation

Brands like USA Today, CBS and Hearst are already using AI technology to generate content. For example, Wibbitz offers a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that allows publishers to turn written content into video content through AI video production.

Publishers used to spend hours, if not days, creating content for their websites or for social media. Tools like Wibbitz are now helping publishers create compelling videos in minutes.

Development of Smart Cities

At present, most global cities are under-equipped to meet the demand of their exploding population. Providing water, electricity, easy transportation, and cleaner air is becoming an increasingly complex challenge for city administrators. Access to healthcare and public services is another major concern.

Smart cities leverage AI, Big Data, and IoT to resolve most of these urban population challenges. In addition to this, AI is also playing a major role in building design and construction activities. AI-based systems can not only manage construction assets but can also improve the selection of vertical framework systems, help in performance diagnostics, and assist in the planning stages of construction.

Cybersecurity

AI can bring new capabilities and beneficial strategies for data and system security. Organizations are investing heavily in building AI systems to analyze huge data troves and in turn, help their cybersecurity professionals to identify possible threats and take precautions or immediate actions to mediate them.

Darktrace is the world leader in AI cyber security. Founded in 2013 by a group of Cambridge University students, it uses an unsupervised machine learning technology and probabilistic mathematics to form the core part of all of it's products. What this means in practice is that the software learns from the experience of analysing vast amounts of data by itself, without human intervention, and can adapt to a business's changing needs. It can also use probabilistic mathematics to determine how likely an attack is. Pretty damn cool.

AI Workforce

It's no secret that the majority of the labor-intensive work in assembly lines of factories will eventually be done by AI programmed robots and replace workers. It's already happening in numerous companies around the world, however the consequenses that this has on human jobs has become one of the main concerns for AI development.
