6 Adaptogens That Can Help Relieve PMS Symptoms and Regulate Periods

Women who don’t experience PMS and heavy periods are truly lucky. About 75 percent of women have PMS symptoms, and for about 20 percent of them, those symptoms are extremely severe. Those who have hormonal imbalances are more prone to premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

PMDD is similar to premenstrual syndrome but it’s more serious and can cause severe irritability, anxiety, or depression. This is due to the fact that high estrogen levels can decrease progesterone and other hormones. Over time, this type of hormone imbalance can contribute to weight gain, mood disorders, hair loss, difficult perimenopausal symptoms, and the inability to get pregnant.

To plan an effective strategy for managing PMS, it’s important to undergo certain tests that can show you what’s causing those symptoms. However, while your doctor waits for your labs, you can use one good method to relieve your symptoms - adaptogens.

Although adaptogens won’t eliminate your PMS, they can help create balance by regulating your hormones. Adaptogenic herbs can also:

  • Improve physical and mental endurance
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Help your brain and adrenals better communicate
  • Support the immune system

1. Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng is good for those who can't concentrate, focus, or just experience mood swings during PMS. The herb is able to boost stamina, energy, focus, and concentration.

Ginseng also helps reduce tiredness, improve the immune system, boost memory, and reduce sleep issues. According to various studies, ginseng can relieve depression and anxiety provoked by stress and inflammatory conditions. Plus, the herb can also enhance your sex drive. However, women with high blood pressure should avoid this herb.

2. Ashwagandha

Insomnia or anxiety oftentimes affect women during their PMS. Ashwagandha decreases cortisol and brings calm. Ashwagandha is especially helpful at bedtime.

The herb also lowers inflammation, can protect from oxidative stress, and eliminate anxiety while boosting memory, sleep, energy, and libido. It can also be helpful for those who have heavy bleeding during their periods and even eliminate uterine fibroids with long-term use.

3. Maca

Hot flashes and night sweats can occur in women with an imbalance in estrogen levels. Maca can balance hormones as well as improve sexual desire. It can also help improve PMS symptoms, boost the immune system, and maintain thyroid health.

However, for some people, maca is a little too stimulating and can provoke stomach discomfort. If you have a sensitive stomach, try starting small, and gradually working up to the full daily dose of 1.5 to 3 grams per day.

4. Reishi

If you often catch colds in the second half of your cycle, try reishi. This is a mushroom that can support adrenal health, reduce stress levels, and help keep colds at bay by enhancing your immune system.

5. Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola Rosea is good for women who experience severe fatigue during their PMS and periods. This adaptogenic herb can help your body keep normal levels of stress hormones while giving energy. According to some studies, Rhodiola Rosea can reduce stress symptoms and even prevent chronic stress. Rhodiola Rosea helps balance progesterone levels. However, those who have a history of bipolar disorder or depression should consult a health care provider before taking this adaptogen.

6. Licorice Root

Oftentimes, PMS is accompanied by oily skin and acne breakouts that usually occur due to increased testosterone levels. Licorice is a herb that can combat testosterone imbalance since it blocks the production of those androgens that provoke your pimples to show up everywhere.

Licorice root has been used in Chinese medicine since it possesses powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties. It boosts energy and lowers inflammation, as well.
